The Only Phonics Resources You Will Ever Need

I received product samples from Super Simple Learning, however, all thoughts are 100% my own.

When I taught my daughters their ABC’s I only used a few items: flash cards, YouTube videos, and books. These tools made my toddlers dance around with excitement and made them eager to learn new letters each week.

I taught my daughters their ABC’s while they were infants and by the time they were one to one and a half years old, they were able to recognize them all. Teaching them the sounds of each letter, however, came a little later and took a little longer.

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a method used to teach people the sounds of letters and letter groups. It is used to teach people how to read and pronounce words.

Phonics Resources I Use in Class

This fall I started teaching, for the first time, a reading readiness class at our local homeschool co-op. The class focuses on teaching letter recognition, phonics and sight words. Each class time I introduce a set of three new letters, followed by exercises to learn their sounds, like asking the class, “What word starts with the letter__?” followed by Super Simple ABC Phonics Fun Songs.

Super Simple ABC Phonics Fun Songs are easy to sing along and their tunes are familiar kid-friendly songs. The CD includes 36 songs that children can listen to to better learn the sounds of letters. It is one of many fantastic phonics resources that Super Simple Learning offers. My class looks forward to this part of class and are always eager to join me in singing.

How to Teach Phonics

  1. Introduce phonics by reintroducing the alphabet. Learn one to a few per week. Review each letter, share their sounds and words that start with that letter.
  2. While reading, point out words, slowly pronouncing each one. Do this so your child can hear the sounds of the letters and words.
  3. Repeat daily.
  4. Reiterate with videos and songs.
