Beautiful Beautiful Me

Author: Ashley Sirah Hinton  Illustrator: Vanessa Brantley

There is no question about whether or not this book was written and put together with love. It is instantly heartwarming and causes you to see skin as children see skin. Each page is full of color, with faces of adorable kiddos, and the children describing themselves with food-only positive descriptive words and comparing their skin to delicious food, with most of the foods being sweets and treats.  If you do not have a taste for something sweet prior to reading this book, you will surely want to whip up some desserts. No need to worry about jumping over to Pinterest to find a good recipe, there’s one in the back of the book! In fact, the book is full of activities for you and your kids to enjoy together and independently, such as:

  • Drawing a picture of yourself
  • Writing a poem about the way you look, using only positive descriptive words
  • Writing a poem about someone who looks different from you, using only positive descriptive words
  • A banana bread recipe to try to make as a family
  • Creating a recipe of your own

Beautiful Beautiful Me facilitates a positive conversation about uniqueness of appearance and acceptance of others’ appearance. The world’s perception of skin color is often times negative and, unfortunately, our children, regardless their race, will experience such negativity. The best way to prepare children for such moment is to encourage them to love the skin that they are in and to look at every child around them as their equal.
